Director Product Development

Description: 
This position is responsible for the supervision, management and execution of technical and scientific activities related to Product Development and Commercialisation of projects and works closely with and deputises for the Sr. Director/VP, Product Development.

Overall responsibilities:

Assist the Head of Product Development in developing, directing and executing R&D strategy in support of key strategic imperatives globally, initially to include (but not limited to): automation and M&A activity support.
Support all commercialization activities related to execution of automation strategy.
Coordinate closely across all functions and senior management to ensure products developed meet all Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Operational and Commercial requirements.
Provide technical due-diligence for new opportunities, such as partnerships and M&A, to ensure that strategic decisions for the R&D team are made with approval from the senior management team are executed in line with Company Goals.
Management of Product Development Team in UK.
Interaction with other groups to ensure products developed meet all Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing requirements.

With Head of Product Development ensure appropriate prioritisation of projects, development and tracking of timelines and allocation of specific staff to Product Development projects, acting as a Deputy when required.
Assist in the review of M&A opportunities.
Management, implementation and presentation of results from allotted Product Development activities, including, where appropriate, presentation of data to internal and external parties.
Understanding of the requirements of internal clients in respect of new projects. Liaison with Sales and Marketing to ensure that proposed solutions meet identified customer needs with regard to supporting data, product configuration etc.
Management of day to day product development laboratory activities and resource.
Liaising with Manufacturing to ensure that projects are at the appropriate stage for transfer to routine production.
Ensuring that projects are carried out in accordance with the Company Quality System.
Along with Head of Product Development, ensuring management of Product Development operational expense to deliver results on time and on budget and participation in forecasting exercises as necessary. This includes accurate cost allocation and regular monitoring.
Adhering to the Company Quality Management System, including ISO 9001:2008, ISO 13485:2016, and ISO 17025:2005
Working to the Company Values at all times.
 

Technical skills and abilities:

Life Sciences degree, and also (preferably) a PhD
>7 years industry experience in the research and development of medical device and/or diagnostic products is desirable.
Knowledge and/or development to commercialisation of automation platforms is highly desirable.
Proven ability to take products from concept to commercialisation.
Proven ability to organize research around marketing objectives and to deliver results in the form of products.
Strong record of line management of scientific staff
Proven ability to lead product development under a quality system
Experience of infectious diseases a distinct advantage
Good working knowledge of business software
Emotional skills and abilities
