Job description

Hobson Prior is recruiting for a Lead Medical Writer to join a research institute based in London. This position will have line management responsibility for the medical education team and will need to ensure that high standards are maintained on all written materials across a range of media.

Lead Medical Writer – London

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure written materials are clinically accurate and on-message, leading the content development process
  • Ensure the timely, and within-budget delivery of all projects
  • Coordinate and communicate plans, priorities and goals
  • Monitor project progress, developing and deploying procedures
  • Define, embed and communicate standards for accuracy on all written materials
  • Manage writing resources
  • Develop and maintain the publication plans for various studies
  • Provide mentorship and advice to junior team members and share best-practice procedures
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary project teams and external advisors

Key Skills

  • Excellent project management and organisational skills, prioritising effectively
  • Able to identify and escalate issues, identifying solutions as soon as possible
  • Very strong interpersonal and communication skills, including grammar and spelling proficiency
  • Highly self-motivated, working to own initiative and juggling numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Very good analytical thinking and decision-making skills


  • A PhD or MSc in life sciences
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a medical writer within the life sciences industry
  • Prior experience in publication planning
  • Some experience working with collaborative and cross-functional teams
  • Previous project management and line management experience
  • Proven knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and processes
  • Familiarity with ICMJE, GPP2, STROBE and other publication standards
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards
