Hobson Prior are seeking a Upstream Expert to join a global pharmaceutical organisation who focuses on delivering innovative medicines and vaccines. This role will be on a permanent basis and will be located in Belgium.
Please note that to be considered for this role you must have the right to work in this location.
Job Responsibilities:
- You will lead autonomously and transversally the USP part of drug substance development projects, driving implementation of latest industry trends and state-of-the-art technologies into current manufacturing processes, identifying and promoting opportunities for improvements aiming for scalable, high efficiency, robust, and cost-effective manufacturing processes with reduced-footprint.
- You will perform timeline and resource planning estimations, design development strategies, plan experimental protocols, lead horizontally a team of scientists, technicians and operators to execute them, having a strong presence in the lab to ensure best practices, compliance with documentation practices and EHS standards.
- You will need to follow the Quality by Design approach to process development, leading multi-disciplinary Technical Risk Assessments and ensuring to meet all documentation deliverables required at each of the project stage gates.
- You will act as a transversal expert in USP technologies, having a deep understanding of the end-to-end manufacturing of recombinant proteins and viral vaccines based on eukaryotic cell hosts, including process development, scale-up, tech transfer and manufacturing, understanding the constraints and challenges and implementing measures to overcome them from early stages of development.
- You will support the Development Unit Head in bringing the team to the next level in technical knowledge, best practices in the field, critical out-of-the-box thinking, end-to-end process and across-team thinking, proactively promoting initiatives that reach across the different department teams.
- You will work diligently with the Development Unit Head and Centre of Excellence to assess and adopt new cell lines and novel technologies such as integrated High Throughput Process Development, Systems Biology, continuous manufacturing, and Process Analytical Technology to achieve better process understanding, robustness and cost-effectiveness.
- To ensure a strong interface and knowledge sharing with, Manufacturing Science and Technology, manufacturing strategy, site management, Process Science, and engineering departments for building related activities such as revamping, scaling-up or tech transfer to new facilities.

Requirements:
- PhD in bio-engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry or equivalent or a Master in bio-engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry or equivalent.
- Fluent in French and English are essential.
- At least 10 years' experience in Upstream Drug Substance Development and/or Manufacturing (Product and Process Expert).
- An in-depth understanding of vaccine upstream and downstream development and/or manufacturing, with working knowledge on global CMC regulatory requirements for vaccine products.
- In-depth knowledge of legacy, current-gen and next-gen vaccine manufacturing technologies, with experience in several aspects out of the following is required: adherent cell culture in cell factories or on microcarriers / different eukaryotic cell substrates such as MRC-5, vero, MDCK, HEK293, CHO, insect cells / single-use systems / GMP manufacturing / raw material traceability, animal-free media / scale-up and scale-down / technology transfer / suspension cell culture and bioreactor (disposable and stainless steel).
- Deep understanding of Quality by Design approach and deliverables.
