I started my career in the retail industry, but after several years I decided on a change of career. I wanted to use my people management skills in an office environment, so began working in recruitment at a high street staffing company.
I really enjoyed the HR aspects of the role, but hated the sales element – so when an ideal opportunity to arose in Hobson Prior’s accounts team, I jumped at it.
In this first role as Contract Management Assistant, I was responsible for processing the contractors’ payroll each month. The position was a three-month contract, but upon its completion I was offered a permanent position. I already felt part of the team and saw many benefits in working at Hobson Prior, so I happily accepted.
From that point, my career really took off. I’ve received several promotions over the last seven years, and I now head up the Contract Management and Support Team.
I’ve worked for several companies who claim to invest in their workforce, but just don’t deliver on their promises. It’s different at Hobson Prior – I truly believe the company operates on the principle that investing in its people is the key to success.
All the leaders and managers within the business have been promoted through the ranks, so it’s clear that hard work and dedication is rewarded here. We’re also encouraged to provide feedback, request training and shout about our successes at our monthly reviews.
When I left school, I didn’t see myself as a particularly ambitious person. My time here has shown this couldn’t be further from the truth. Hobson Prior has continuously pushed me out of my comfort zone, while supporting and encouraging me to achieve my full potential. I’m very grateful for everything that’s been invested in me over the years, and I’m excited to see where my career with Hobson Prior goes next.
When I graduated in 2010 with a degree in Business Economics, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I’d completed some work placements at Westminster and local councils, but they didn’t fit with my aspirations. They seemed to reward length of service rather than hard work and talent – and I didn’t want my career progression to be dependent on someone else leaving.
I began to consider a career in recruitment after visiting a jobs fair. I was excited by the progression and earning potential it offered, and I realised this was an industry that would recognise and reward my hard work. It suited my personality too; I never thought I could make money from my favourite pastime – talking!
I was immediately impressed by Hobson Prior as an ambitious company that invested in its people. I had my first interview with Jake, who is now our Managing Director. He highlighted the benefits of the job, including uncapped earnings, excellent training and a plethora of career development opportunities. I can honestly say that over the six years I’ve worked here, these promises have been met well beyond my expectations.
Since starting out as a Trainee in 2010, I’ve received consistent training and development opportunities, enabling me to secure several promotions. I’m now a Team Manager, leading a team of four consultants on the interim side of the business. Being able to define my own pace of progression is something that really drives me, and Hobson Prior has enabled me to do just this.
After six years of working in recruitment, I’ve realised there are very few careers where you have so much control over your own pay packet. The extra work you put in significantly influences what you take home each month. The financial rewards offered here have been fundamental to my ability to buy a house, travel abroad and feel financially stable.

I graduated in 2009 and, despite achieving a first class degree in business administration, had no idea what I wanted to do for a career. I spent the next couple of years working in marketing and telesales but neither was for me.
I never planned to become a recruitment consultant; I don’t think many people do, but I knew my strengths would be suited to recruitment so decided to search online for graduate recruitment jobs. Immediately, one ad stood out - Hobson Prior’s - which I immediately responded to. Two interviews later, I received the phone call that I had been hoping for and started planning my move to Tunbridge Wells.
Hobson Prior is recognised as an ‘Investors in People’ organisation and this is certainly reflected in the time, money and effort they put into training. There are various external and internal training programmes, which are open to all consultants, from graduates upwards. I’ve felt the training I’ve received to be comprehensive and diverse, the objective always focused on how I can be not just a good consultant, but an excellent one.
Everyone was very welcoming and friendly from the outset and I realised I’d made the correct decision to join Hobson Prior during after-work drinks at the end of my first week; I already felt part of the team.
The first few weeks were very much about learning from others and listening to advice. I was also tasked with researching the pharmaceutical industry and presenting my findings back to a panel, which included the MD. For someone with limited knowledge of the industry and science in general, this was a great way to learn more about it and I realised how interesting the sector is.
I made my first placement in Germany and, many years later, the contractor is still on site with that client today. I now specialise in biometrics across Europe and am enjoying the financial rewards; I’ve recently brought a new car and am planning to buy a new apartment in Tunbridge Wells.
I graduated in 2014 having studied biology at University. I was keen to use my scientific background in my career and this, combined with the commission and target driven aspect of the role, made recruitment an interesting sector.
Hobson Prior really appealed to me, based on its progression and rewards structures, and the roles it worked on within life sciences. I applied whilst still at university, and within a month of graduating I had interviewed and been offered a job in the London office.
As a graduate with no prior recruitment experience, the training I received from day one was invaluable. It ranged from desk-based shadowing exercises with experienced consultants, to subject knowledge within my niche function. The training programme was tailored to meet my learning style, and everyone in the team was happy to help answer my questions.
Having gained exposure to all aspects of recruitment, it became clear that my skills were suited to client relationship management. I was provided with further training in this area, before being given the chance to establish and head up the new Key Clients Team.
Since being promoted to Key Client Team Leader, I've enjoyed achieving personal success by exceeding my targets, as well as seeing successes within my growing team.
A unique aspect of working at Hobson Prior is that there’s no limit to your progression. There are always opportunities to propose new niches and methods, and this enables the creation of new management and leaderships posts.

I graduated in 2008 and worked in customer service. During my time in customer service I was overlooked for several promotions as the company brought in external staff for these openings.
I begun to look into a career in recruitment and found out about Hobson Prior. The things that appealed to me most about Hobson Prior were the earning potential, promotion prospects and training program as I thought this would be a place where I could develop my career without the threat of external staff taking the jobs above me.
During my training period at Hobson Prior I was able to achieve success and recognition by making several placements and also winning the ‘consultant of the month’ award during my second month.
After being promoted out of my training period then I was able to continue my success by hitting my development targets and being promoted through the consulting levels.
